Greetings and welcome! This website is dedicated entirely to answering all of your questions as to how to make a quilt for the beginner.
First let’s start with some basic information about what quilting is and the mechanics of quilting.
Quilting is a sewing method whereby two or more layers of material are joined together to make a thicker padded, and usually stitched material. When you begin to quilt, you will become a quilter, which is the name given to someone who practices the fine art of quilting. You can quilt by hand, by sewing machine, or by a specialist longarm quilting system. Traditional quilting is done with three layers: the top fabric or quilt top, batting or insulating material and backing material. The quilter’s hand or sewing machine passes the threaded needle throughout all of the layers. The stitching covers the entire piece wherever you desire the quilting effect. A rocking, straight or running stitch is commonly used and these stitches can be purely functional or decorative and elaborate.
You can use quilting to create bed spreads, clothing, and any variety of textile products. You can also use quilting to create beautiful works of art to hang on your wall.
Quilters today use a wide range of quilting designs and styles, from ancient and ethnic to post-modern futuristic patterns. There is no one single school or style that dominates the quilt-making world.
It’s a great tradition to quilt with others, this is called a quilting bee. Often you can find quilting classes in your local area that offer classes on how to sew or quilt, and exchange skills with others.
